For most people, becoming stronger isn't really about the gym. It's about everything strength allows you to keep doing outside it.
Walking comfortably. Playing golf or tennis. Gardening. Travelling. Playing with children or grandchildren. Staying active and remaining independent. IMPROVE is designed to make strength training a simple part of normal life, not something that has to take it over.
Built on evidence, not gym folklore.
You don't need to spend hours in the gym to become stronger.
A study of nearly 15,000 adults found substantial strength gains from six exercises, one set of each, performed just once a week. It's encouraging evidence that a simple routine, with a manageable commitment of time, can make a meaningful difference.
That doesn't mean once a week is optimal for every person or every goal. Higher training volumes can produce greater adaptations. IMPROVE is designed around a different question: how can we make effective strength training as accessible, time efficient and sustainable as possible?

Why IMPROVE exists.
IMPROVE came from a fairly simple thought. Strength matters, probably more than most people realise, but traditional gyms are not for everyone.
I have trained for most of my adult life and, for many years, I thought about strength mainly in terms of performance. Getting stronger, lifting more and improving physically.
My view of that changed quite a lot when my own health changed.
After major heart surgery, and with the ongoing effects of heart failure, I had to adapt the way I trained and think much more carefully about why I was doing it in the first place.
For me, strength became less about what I could lift and more about what it allowed me to keep doing. Walking, cycling, travelling and generally feeling confident that my body was still capable of doing the things I wanted it to do.
That made me look at strength training differently.
Most people are not interested in becoming gym enthusiasts. They just want to stay active, feel strong and keep doing the things they enjoy for as long as possible.
That might mean walking comfortably, playing golf or tennis, gardening, travelling, playing with children or grandchildren, or simply remaining independent as they get older.
The problem I kept coming back to was that strength training can feel far more complicated and time consuming than it needs to.
I started looking more closely at the research and asking whether there was a simpler way to deliver the benefits of strength training without asking people to spend several hours a week in a gym.
That is really where IMPROVE came from.
A simple, supervised approach to strength training for people who want to become stronger, but do not necessarily want the gym to become a big part of their life.
Six movements. Around 30 minutes. Once a week.
Everything is guided, progress is measured and the focus is simply on helping people become stronger and stay capable for longer.
That is what IMPROVE is about.
